From casual conversations to surveys and Member Advisory Committees, in recent years, one theme continues to surface in member feedback:
The increasing costs of living, and specifically housing, are one of the biggest issues our communities face today.
Whether it’s saving for a down payment, understanding what you can truly afford, or figuring out if a rental suite makes sense, people are looking for clear, local, trustworthy information. In response, we’ve launched a new Housing Affordability Information Hub that can be viewed here.
This online hub is designed as a living resource for members — a place that will continue to grow and develop with even more tools, calculators, and interactive elements over time. It’s built to provide useful, timely, and practical information so that, instead of feeling overwhelmed, you can start to see the path forward: what to focus on, which questions to ask, and how all the moving pieces of homeownership fit together.
From big-picture topics like “How much home can I really afford?” (be sure to try out the StellerVista cost of living calculator >) to more detailed questions about down payments, closing costs, and first-time buyer programs, the goal is simple: make the information easier to understand, easier to find, and easier to use as you plan your next steps.
To kick off the launch, the hub also includes a feature article and podcast episode on rental helper suites — exploring how a basement or secondary suite can help support a mortgage, and what to consider before you rely on that income. It’s a great starting point if you’ve been wondering whether a suite could be part of your own homeownership plan.
Of course, this new hub doesn’t replace our people — it complements them. Our StellerVista Guides are available in branch and by phone with all of this information and more, and can help you build a flexible, realistic plan to get onto the trail of homeownership. But for all those DIY learners out there, we are excited to share this new resource, that is truly focused on education and information sharing – with no guise of sales or pressure of any kind.
